Originally from north west England, she spent part of her childhood in East Asia and later lived in Edinburgh for 20 years. Although she now works remotely from Oxford, her connection to Edinburgh remains strong.Following eight years as a post-doctoral research fellow, conducting research into the role of nano particulate air pollution in cardiovascular disease, Katie joined the Department of Clinical Surgery and Surgical Informatics group in 2015.She takes great pride in her work, particularly in her role as a personal tutor, where she supported nearly 500 students graduating from the MSc Surgical Sciences programme at the University of Edinburgh.Her guidance and mentorship have had a lasting impact on her students, as evident from one student who said: "Katie was always with me, helping, supporting me, [until] I graduated in 2019."Katie also has made significant contributions to the field of surgical research. She established and built an international Global Surgical Research collaboration, which has achieved remarkable recognition, including being part of the Guinness World Record for the largest scientific collaboration.
